Description
Charles Becknell Sr. — an area church pastor, teacher and author— is ready to share his account of what life was like growing up black in the state. The longtime civil rights activist recently wrote and self-published an autobiography titled, “No Challenge— No Change: Growing Up Black in New Mexico.” Becknell said his book is designed to open up a window for others to look into and see what it was like growing up black in an atmosphere of racism and segregation in southeastern New Mexico. The book gives his account of his education, racial tensions in black communities, the criminal justice system and Southwest politics.
