Portrait of a General, George Armstrong and the Battle of Little Big Horn is not a biography of Custer but rather a positive study of him. It deals with his early life, his outstanding Civil War record, his years on the Western Plains and finally the Battle of Little Big Horn where he and five companies of the United States Cavalry lost their lives in a mystery shrouded battle with Indians of the Western Plains. The book contains testimony on behalf of Custer from both his enemies and friends and thirty one photos, some rare.
Review
Portrait of a General provides a quick, factual review of the more important phases of the “Custer Story” including his phenomenal performance in the Civil War. Perhaps more important the author has punctuated each chapter with quotations from writings of Custer contemporaries. Speaking for the Custer family, I would like to thank those who search for the truth and to W. Donald Horn in particular for his many years of informed defense of the competence and character of my Great Great Uncle George Armstrong Custer. —
Brice C. Custer, Great Great Nephew of George Armstrong Custer
