Holiday House (1960); Signed by author; !st/!st; Vg/Vg; Octavo; Not Ex-Library, Not Book Club, Not Print on Demand; Hb- Bright yellow cloth decorated (front/back) with lovely orange & brown butterflies & flowers, spine slightly cocked, very minimal edgewear; Dj- White background with full color pictorial (front/back), two open tears to front top (approx- 1/2”x1/2” + 1/2”x 1/4”), tear with fold-down to top rear (approx- 2 1/1”x 1/4”), tiny fold-down tear to lower rear flap (approx-1/8”), small chipping to spine top, smudging; 26ppg- clean, flat, last page lists names of butterflies + moths in order of appearance; Includes 4 real, mounted butterflies (Black Swallowtail, Buckeye or Peacock, Cabbage, Alfalfa, Viceroy) & 1 moth (unknown) each encased in tiny glassine slip which is taped to the appropriate page, each insect has printed body affixed. This wonderful book on butterflies & moths was written by author(& Hayward children’s librarian) Gladys Conklin & illustrated by noted Taos artist Barbara Latham (who worked on a number of Holiday House children’s books.). Gladys Conklin loved insects, and she loved children. She enjoyed teaching kids and even hosted a “Bug Club” for children in her area where she would teach them to appreciate and admire the complexities of insects and other small animals.
