Description
There had been no warning. The expected hurricane had apparently passed away. Throughout the northeastern states, weather forecasts predicted humid weather, possible showers. Then, on the night of August 19th, the heavens opened and a half-year’s rain fell in twenty-four hours. Roaring through the river valleys, smashing wall of water flung aside steel and concrete embankments, ripped into defenseless cities and the people fought for their lives. By dawn 187 persons had drowned, thousands were homeless, and property damaged alone ran more than half a billion dollars in New England’s worst flood disaster. But now help was coming. In dozens of ravaged towns, emergency crews and volunteer workers struggled to set up hospitals and shelters. And in the skies helicopters hovered, searching for survivors in the greatest rescue operation of modern times.
