In my years of counseling, and through my close association with many clergy and lay counselors, I have learned that there is more to be concerned about than merely communicating truth to those seeking spiritual guidance. In today’s litigious society we have had to become cautious regarding the many possibilities for legal action. Pastors, prayer group leaders, Bible study teachers, and even church secretaries are learning that great caution must be exercised int he ministry lest any deviaiaton from societal norms be construed as neglectful or harmful to another. Virtually all Christians are in agreement with the biblical mandate to live within “Caesar’s” guidelines. But the question often arises: “Exactly what are the boundaries that apply to Christians who are called up to assist individuals seeking Gtod’s will for their lives. I am most greatful to Steve Levicoff for the way he has helped the Christian community decipher the legal boundaries that aplly to Christian ministries. Using case examples and citing legal precedents, he makes clear that which otherwise might be confounding. He specifically spells out what constitutes confidentiality, when to defer to medical personnel, when to involve the family, and many other pertinent issues. After reading the book, the Christian counseler should have a clear direction in those delicate issues that require a careful understanding of the counselee’s rights and the counselor’s responsibilities.
